Diablo 5 Story & Setting
Diablo V begins after Diablo has won: the heroes of the past have failed and Sanctuary has fallen. You inherit the throne of Westmark and travel a devastated world that the Lord of Terror actively reshapes as the story unfolds.
The premise
"The heroes of the past have failed. Sanctuary has fallen and Diablo has won." With this line Blizzard framed Diablo V at BlizzCon 2026. The game opens in a world already lost to the Lord of Terror — not on the eve of his return, but after his victory.
The throne of Westmark
The player inherits the throne of Westmark. Blizzard has not yet described who ruled before, what the inheritance entails or how Westmark fits into the wider map of Sanctuary — only that this seat is yours and that the world beyond it lies in ruin.
A world Diablo reshapes
Diablo is an active force in the story: he reshapes Sanctuary, changing terrain, locations, monsters and rewards. Blizzard presents this as both a narrative device and a gameplay system — the world you travel is not fixed. Gameplay →
A darker vision
Blizzard describes Diablo V as a darker vision for the next era of the series. A caravan of allies serves as your travelling base through the ruined lands.
